The problem that news paper columnist, Dan Rodrick sees in the inner harbor is that not enough police officers are patrolling the area. He wants for the city to get the street lights fixed, get the annual homicide count down, arrest bad guys with guns, and keep the downtown and inner harbor safe. I agree with his opinion because downtown is where Maryland makes most of its money. Maryland also gets tourist who spend money at our stores and if we scare them away then it could have a serious impact on the city and it's finances. Since the country is going through a financial crisis, more money taken away from the city plays a big role in the well being of the state.

It makes sense to add that, it's a very important point that people need to realize.I also kind of dis agree when you said downtown makes most of Maryland's money. I think that The Major tourist attractions such as malls, and strips make a large portion of the money to keep the finacial state above where it needs to be.
DeleteThe economic view point of this piece is very mind boggling. Just for the simple fact that it is true. The haenormous area does make up most of the Maryland revenue and knuckleheads are affecting that and it takes a Rhian, Ryan to come up with it.

DeleteBe careful with the economic implications in this article. That's not a main point, although Rodricks does hint at the "knuckleheads" keeping people away from downtown. Instead, the main issue here is the safety and reallocation of police officers from other places to the Inner Harbor.
In "Inner Harbor", News paper columnist, Dan Rodrick sees a problem in the Inner Harbor. The problem is that too much unsafe things happen down the Inner Harbor, and there aren't enough police to keep it under control. people are scared to take their families there because they're afraid something bad will happen. To avoid trouble they just don't go. Dan Rodrick wants street lights fixed, more officers, and the homocide rate to go down. I agree with the author's opinion because I think the Inner Harbor should be safe for people to go and enjoy theirselves without worrying if something bad will happen. It's also the place where most tourists go, their families would like it if they made it back home safely. Lately when too many people go down the Harbor some don't return home because they were hurt or killed. Therefore to make it better the things the author pointed out to fix sound a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI agree Deja because people should be able to enjoy themselves in the Inner Harbor without worrying about harm to them. People shouldn't have to worry about going to the hospital because of harm to someone or someone harm them. People should be able to have a good time and enjoy the day with out any crime going on around them.

Is it truly THAT dangerous downtown, or are there just a few big cases that are publicized (such as the little boy who was grazed by a bullet last July 4th)?
DeleteI agree Rhian the Inner Harbor does make alot of money, so they do play a big role and the tourists need to be safe when they go their to spend money and have a nice time.

Dan Rodricks see the police searching the cars to see if people are wearetheir seat belts, but he don't see any cops searching the streets to make sure the people walking on the sidewalk are safe. He wants the streets yo have more cops so that the knuckleheads riding the bikes aren't disturbing the people walking on the sidewalk. Dan want for there to be more working street lights so that crime can be seen easily. Dan need for more cops to patrol the Inner Harbor because now a days people are scared to bring their families downtown because there are so many crimes going on right in the Inner Harbor. I agree with Dan because when more police are able.to patrol the Inner. Harbor then people can stop being afraid to enjoy a holiday like the fourth of July with their family in the Inner Harbor.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree with you Daisha the police are lacking in their jobs when it comes to keeping the Harbor safe and the City is not keeping up with their jobs either,not providing the public with the necesities needed for public safety.

The Problem Dan Roderick see's in the Inner Harbor is they're isn't any safety or order in the harbor and it doesnt look like there are any precauions or lans to make the problem any better. Where in the harbo to much violence or incidents occur as well asn there are not enough patrolmen on the harbor and i dont mean security guards I mean police officers that are trained and ready at all times for anything that may popoff or occur basically first responders. Also the City does need to fix lights well as add new one beacuse some of these ligts have been up for over 25 years and its time we get some decent lights and keep using dull and barely lit lights that cant even light up a ally. Last as well as with the author I would like to see the murder rate decraes eit's a shame how people kill each other sensesly that makes the state and city look bad whcih can be bad for the state economy benefits greatly from the harbor and no body wants to go to a unsafe dirty and unkept place
ReplyDeleteI think that you should have taken your time inwrighting this because I could barely understand what you was saying and you was using to much slang in it. Getting new lights isn't the problem it's the light bulbs, no need to spend money on working lights when the problem is only the bulbs.
DeleteDan Rodricks sees that the Inner Harbor “needs to be respected and protected”, by there being more police and fewer knuckleheads. He wrote this article just because of his encounter with the knucklehead whose bike’s front tire was too close to his face. His whole point is about keeping Baltimore’s Inner Harbor safe; why not all of Baltimore city, his personal experience is the main focus of his article. Then he starts stating facts about Downtown Baltimore/tract 401, “Harbor place open thirty-two years ago, and over time the investment in that corner of waterfront has paid off., it showed the most population growth in the city between 2000and 2010. Its new residents include young professionals, college students, retirees and people who commute to Washington. Harbor place, the aquarium, the Power Plant, Pier 6, The Gallery, Pratt Street and the whole long stretch of hotels, offices and businesses to the convention center and Camden Yards- it took three decades to build all that, to transform an industrial waterfront and empty-at-night downtown into a destination for tourist and a point of pride for the most jaded city dwellers”. So, no I don’t agree with his opinion, he wrote this article because of the bike incident, not because he wants the Inner Harbor “protected and respected”.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you Bria because he does want the harbor to be safe. If someone has a bike wheel in your face riding towards you they could hit you in your face. Thats not safe, he was using the bike incident as an example.

First, how can you say that he wrote this article only from the bike incident, he could have seen things throughout the time he was at the inner harbor, and chose not to put that in his article. Yes, the whole point of his article was protecting and respecting the Inner Harbor, and not the rest of Baltimore, that's because they spent 3 decades on building it up, and is a main attraction in Baltimore.

DeleteThe Inner Harbor, Baltimore's main attraction, should be kept in a respectful and decently manner. Tourist come to Inner Harbor to have a wonderful, and care free time. There is a problem that newspaper columnist, Dan Rodricks, see in the Inner Harbor. The problem is that they are lacking in the number of policemen and woman who should keep watch of what goes on within the Harbor. He wants the Inner Harbor to be a safe place where people can bring their families without worrying about whether they are safe or not. The solutions that he wants them to implement are to fix streets light, arrest the bad people, and get the homicide rate down. I do agree with Dan Rodricks the Inner Harbor is a place where people go to have a good time, not having to worry about their lives being in jeopardy.

DeleteThe problem mr.Rodricks see's in at the Harbor is the "Knuclehead Squad" coming out at the restricted hours for biking.I understand what he is saying and also I agree. It's rediculous that people have to limit themselves to a good time at the harbor because of foolishness of the younger generation. The harbor is for everyone of all ages and it's disrespectful to pop a wheelie in front of an adult, especially an elderly person. The police really need to enforce this policy more because it's unfair to the rest of the Baltimorians who just want to have fun Downtwon and at the HArbor.I agree woth his opinion because it makes complete sense. This kind of behavior makes the Harbor unattractive and people start to stay in or go elsewhere instead of the woundeful Inner Harbor.

In essay 5 I agree partly with Dan Rodricks. The harbor does need more patroll and I also think more inforcment on rules. But everyone plays a part in that people have to stop being helpless and lt officers know because they are human like us and need the help of everyone to keep the harbor safe and downtown.
ReplyDeleteThe problem that Rodricks saw while taking a stroll down town is a group of knuckleheads disregarding rules and regulations. He also see a increase in violence based on the constant growth and redevelopment of the downtown area. Rodricks suggest that more police are put on foot potroale throught out the harbor area. With more police people would follow the rules better. The harbor is a tourist attraction. But no one wants to go there if it means getting harrassed which in turn affects the economy of Baltimore, which hurts Marylands economy, which hurts the usa economy, which in turn hurts the global economy. I do agree with all that Rodricks see and express because sometimes im one of those knuckleheads and other times i want the police to come so that price will go down.

DeleteI have to agree with you. If they feel going down the harbor means they might be harrassed by people why go. That means the inner harbor loses money daily while people not feeling safe.

DeleteRyan-- I appreciate your comment on the economy, but I think it may be a bit of a stretch to say that the economy of the Inner Harbor eventually affects the global economy. Of course everything is related, but I don't think that it is in any meaningful way. In the same vein, you are absolutely right when you say that the economy of Baltimore City affects Maryland's economy. Just be careful of taking a great point and stretching it. You could hurt your argument more than help it.

ReplyDeleteIn essay 5 the author is trying to explain that we need more police officers to maintain peace. The author sees people aggressively riding bikes almost hitting citizens. This is dangerous and makes citizens paranoid of getting hit. I know if I'm paranoid it is hard for me to enjoy myself. I agree because I have seen incidents where innocent people get hurt when policemen are not around. Sometimes police officers are everywhere but where they are needed
I kinda understand what you where saying but you should be more thorough with your responses.
DeleteDan Rodricks found many problems with the inner harbor including: some of the street lights were not working, there were not enought police on foot patrolling the area, there were kids on bikes harrasing pedestrians, and that violence has had a tendency of erupting around hollidays. Dan suggest that to solve these problems the city should fix the lights, get rid of troublemakers, and put more police on patrol in the area. I agree with Dans opinion, the city should keep the Inner Harbor safe and well maintained as it is where a majority of people come to spend there time, and also because it is where most tourist come and make money for the city.

Rodrick feels as though the traffic lights should be fixed and that there should be more police officer patrolling the streets. I agree with his opinion, in the fourth paragraph of the article Rodrick says “ I know our police have more important things to do, but this was the Inner Harbor, the center of Baltimore public life, It needs to be respected and safe.” That statement is so true. When Baltimore gets visitors the harbor is suppose to be the tourist attraction. Now, some people are scared to even be bothered with the harbor because it isn’t safe. Rodrick also mentioned that some people would only go down the harbor for a game because of the safety risk. I agree with the statements that he made I feel as though you should always feel safe in your environment so Yes, more cops are needed.

I agree with Rodricks opinion because it would allow the tourist and the people that live in Baltimore to come downtown to the Inner Harbor and enjoy their selves without worrying about getting hurt during holidays and other times of the year.

To make the inner harbor safe, but fun at night for the people. They need to make sure everyone has the right intention when going down the harbor at night. Their be families with kids down the harbor at night, we dont want them to feel as thought its not safe for their kids and theirselves. More cops and fixing broken street lights letsthem know that it is safe to be down the harbor at night.

"Knuckleheads" are continuing to break the rules and make the harbor a less enjoyable spot for families. Dan encountered a situation where a group of boys were riding bikes in the evening around the waterfront, while bike riding is not permitted around that time. Hendricks specifically wants the cops to arrest bad guys with guns, fix the street lights, and decrease the homicide rate. "The harbor needs to be respected and protected." There are people from all over that come downtown to walk around the harbor. I agree with Dan Hendricks, the harbor and/or downtown as a whole, needs to be more safe. Every year during big celebrations, you hear a tragedy that happens! It only gets worst as the police decide not too improve.
