Hello,
AP Lang students (and, possibly, parents)! My name is Ms. Guldin; however, you
may call me Ms. G. I truly am sorry for
not be able to be at the meeting and that I haven’t truly met any of you yet.
My fiancé was leaving for a year-long tour in Afghanistan that day, and it was
important to me to be able to say goodbye to him. This introduction essay is
going to be rather informal in its presentation, but that is the nature of this
assignment. (Please note, however, that while this essay is informal, I’m still
using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling… and you should, too. ) Right now, in my life, there are three,
rather big things that really define who I am at the moment.
Ever
since childhood, I’ve loved the beach. Specifically, I love tiny beach
towns—the ones that most tourists don’t go to. I am enamored with the slower
pace of life and the way that the townspeople live side-by-side with nature. It
is my dream to someday own a small, seaside bungalow and own a bookstore with a
café, although I’m sure it will not come to fruition until I retire from
teaching. Ironically enough, I hate boats, and I prefer not to swim further
than where I can stand in the surf. I’d rather admire the beauty and majesty of
the ocean from a comfortable beach chair planted firmly in the sand at the
water’s edge.
I am a
bibliophile, which means that I am a lover of books. Books have always been a
part of my life—my earliest memory is surprising my parents by reading from a
newspaper one night. Throughout m y life, I have learned and experienced so
much from reading. While it may sound cheesy, books provide a window into
different times and places, some of which we may never have the chance to experience
first-hand. Perhaps, however, I love books most because I get to meet some of
the most fantastic characters and see them react to strange, and sometimes
wonderful, situations. I would list my favorite books here, but I have too many
to name. Some of my all-time favorites include To Kill a Mockingbird, All
Quiet on the Western Front, and A
Moveable Feast. These books have truly changed my life.
Finally,
I also identify as a writer. I like to write fiction, mostly. I am very
interested in the way people interact with each other in various situations.
Writing gives me a chance to write about the world from my perspective. I also
get to create people and talk about things that are important to me. My
ultimate goal—perhaps when I have my house by the ocean—is to publish a book. I
don’t have to be famous, but I wouldn’t mind having the chance to do a book
tour or be interviewed!
There
are many other things that define me—the music I like, the type of movies I
watch, my family—just as I’m sure there are many things that define you. We are
not the sum of just one or two parts of our lives. I hope to get to know you
throughout this course, and I look forward in doing so!
