In "A cheating crisis. In America's schools," many students rationalize their choice. To cheat by saying that it's "stupid" not to since "everyone" is doing it, or that successful people. In the "real world" rip each other's work off all time. The truth is people just want to fit in. People don't understand that one day along the line cheating will catch up with you. The fancy job that you want in the future, you may not get all because you took the easy way out of learning and understanding something. Many people don't get opportunities because they are not able to understand the working process, or simply because they don't know how to the process goes. When you cheat in math your only cheating your self, because it will be your pay check they cheat you out of. Cheating in English class wont really help any, because many jobs require you to be able to read, without being able to read how would you know what the rules are, what things are for your customers, and how would you know what things are good to eat and what things are bad to eat. Cheating is like a cancer that can cause you your life. With that said would you rather have cancer or would you rather BE CANCER FREE? It's your life so make the best of it.

If people want to cheat it wont be deadly, but you are cheating yourself from actually having a better chance at being successful in life. Many people don't really are how they get the gads as long as they get it and know that they bare cheating themselves but don't really care. Some people just want to take the easy way out on life, even if their choices can affect their lives.

I do not agree with this sentiment because even though you may see someone else doing something wrong does not give you the right to do the same thing just because it may save you from really having to think when doing your work. As a person you shouldn't just want to skate through life taking credit for someone else's work and just copy and paste words from a computer, you should want to challenge yourself and not always take the easy way out of life. When you cheat in life you cheat yourself, so even though people may think they are being sneaky and getting over on their teacher all they really are doing is cheating themselves on knowledge and life. It is not alright to cheat just because everyone else is doing it, if everyone was jumping off a building would they jump also? Hopefully they wouldn't, but when you are following behind a crowd of people you turn into a follower and less of a leader. There should be a punishment for people who cheat. People who cheat should get a zero on their paper since they didn't do anything except copy and past from someone else's work.

In my opinion it is not okay to cheat off someone else's work. Just because everyone else is participating in cheating, doesn't make it right for you to cheat. If you put time and effort into your work you could get good grades. The teacher will also see that you are a student who take your work seriously and you actually took the time to get the answers on your own. Unlike other students who cheat, you will have completely different answers. When you cheat off someone else's work you are only cheating yourself out of a lesson you could have learned. If you cheat off everyone else you will never learn to think for yourself. People think that's the way of life once they get used to doing it over and over again. It's not fair to the students who actually work hard,to have others come and cheat off their work. Hardwork pays off in the end, so anyone can cheat off someone else,but when they get on their own they will be lost when they have no one to cheat off of. Students who cheat off others should have to do their assignments over. Sometimes students often cheat because they may not understand the work but are afraid to ask for help. However,that's no excuse to take credit for someone else's hard work. Therefore, people who cheat should get zeros like it has been.

DeleteDaisha-- While some may think your metaphor comparing cancer and cheating is extreme, I agree. If one is willing to cheat on something small, it leads to larger issues of honesty and integrity. Essentially, what WON'T you be willing to do if you're willing to lie on a small homework assignment that doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things?

Deja-- You hit on a very important part that many people don't recognize-- if you don't do your own work, you won't actually learn anything. In effect (in my opinion), you're cheating yourself out of an education when you cheat. Good thinking!

because everything someone does isn't right. I feel as though students should ask themselves if
everyone were jumping off of buildings onto a moon bounce would you ? Would you really risk your
life to fit -in ? What if everyones moon bounce saved them but yours busted ? Its the samething

Instead of copying somebody else's work and not really doing something. No, just because other people are cheating doesn't mean you have to, be original. Students need to realize that when they cheat off of each other they are cheating their selves out of their lives. The punishment for students should be if it their first time let them re-write it if it their second time give them a ZERO .

ReplyDeleteI do not agree with this sentiment, neither do I think cheating is okay. One's action is to cheat doesn't mean that one should base one's actions off someone else's, whether they are successful or not. Be yourself. Like the saying goes, two wrongs do not make a right. I believe that taking a free ride through life, cheating off others, would soon catch up with you. That's if you even get anywhere in life. You're not being challenged, and are losing the ability to think on your own. If one of the most famous people in the world jump off an cliff, would you? Is it fair to someone, who put all there time and effort into their assignment and received an A- , than to you who received A+, knowing that you didn't put nearly as much effort and time? The punishment for plagiarism for an college student is being kick out of school, however for high school student the punishment should be receiving an 0 on their assignment.

ReplyDeleteI do not agree with this sentiment. one because cheating doesnt get you anywhere in life but to where you belong. Cheating gets you by, but when you need your skills what are YOU going to do, yopu can't cheat off of your co-worker at work when inspection comes around. In "A Cheating Crisis in America's Schools" in the 3rd paragraph its says "74 percent admitted cheating on an examination at least once in the past year.". Students don't realize by cheating it"s not getting you what you need to succeed in life. The punishment for plagiarizing, copying, and cheating should be an automatic 0 on the assignment and a 26 paragraph essay explaining why you cheated on your assignment. That's just how I feel about it.

ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with the stereotypical mindset of many students. Cheating will always and forever be the negligent way to bypass in life. Successful people chip other successful people's work to get an extra edge on their own, but the person who produces the masterpiece is always the most honorable. Our society, in this day in time, is fine with being average. No one has enough ambition to strive among others, instead everyone is fine with doing just enough. If everyone else is following a negative trend and you do too, it makes you a follower. All students who plagiarize should fail the assignment and receive two more assignments that are twice as large.

ReplyDeleteI disagree with this sentiment, I also do not think that cheating is okay. When you cheat to try and get better grades, or to get a better job you just end up cheating yourself in the long run. Instead of spending time to obtain valuable knowledge, these students have spent their time copying other peoples work or coming up with deceiving ways to cheat. This can drastically impede your intelligence and quality of life. Students in the essay stated that cheating is okay because "everyone" is doing it, however just because many people may be cheating does not mean you have to follow in their act. Students also stated that it is okay to cheat because successful people in the "real world" rip each other's work off all the time. However you can still succeed in getting great and or better jobs when not cheating, while also becoming an intelligent person that didn't waist a education they probably will have to pay for. In my opinion students should be punished for cheating by getting a zero on the assignment or test.

I also believe that it is alright to cheat if everyone is cheating, but only to maintain a successful grade. There should be a punishment for people that cheat but it should only be a slap on the wrist saying that you can do better if you try. This is because many people cannot come up with good ideas themselves/ or the best ideas have already been used and explained. The only reason I believe this is because the big industries use each other's ideas and build on them, but the basic idea is still stolen. Such as the water gun everybody and their great uncle has a design and model for a super soaker but the original was built by Lonnie G. Johnson. I especially believe this statement when it comes to school work, such as research papers or thesis papers, only because the same idea you may have 100 other people may have had it. So if you look at it there is no way that you cannot help but to cheat, and if you may happen to use one section of someone else’s paper then it is justified. Only because of the little chances you have of not receiving the same around about topic, and for the simple fact that no matter how good big business people are they are cheater just like the worst of them. Not only do I agree that it is okay to cheat but I also agree that it is okay to do it if everyone else is doing it but with a stipulation. ReplyDeleteI disagree with the statement made that "everyone is doing it" and that in the "real world people do it all the time." It doesnt make sense to copy off of someone else's genius or hard work when you can also produce the same work through determination and a little bit of usng your brain. If people were to take the time and sit to do their work it would be at the highest quality everytime. I also disagree with "it is alright to cheat if everybody is doing it". I say this becasue everyone is not cheating on their work. Some students actually think on their own to finish work on time without a problem. Cheaters just make it hard for the students that do accomplish assignments on time.

Personally I dont like cheating because when you cheat your depriving your self of something very important that can be very vital and consuming to you, which has been mistreated an lost because you decided to take the easy way out of work (life) and being lazy. Also I strongly disagree with the statement "everyone is doing it" that is stupid and and a immature response to a way you might handle life just because everyone is doing something doesnt mean it may be positive or positive some time you have to let others to what they do and you do what you do because working - life is'nt about about doing what everyone else does and following the crowd but it's about what you can do for yourself and others thats positive as well being a leader and not a follower. ReplyDeleteI'm am late to this topic I apologize. From reading this passage on cheating I feel that yes cheating is wrong but the problem I have is most students cheat and they don't have to. The passage made good ponints for example Angelo Angelis says "we need to promote integrity". That's fine but people only think about one side what about the group of people who go home to a unstable family and have no place to study or the kids who are raising kids or kids who have to take care of there younger brothers or sisters. Every day we are facing diffrient struggles I'm not saying cheating is right but I will not say it is wrong for students like the ones I listed you might say there is no excuse for that behavior but there is no excuse for your blindness to society that we live in. People cheat because they are afraid to be left behind and from personal experience some teachers have students in mind who are more likely to succeed so they help those kids progress and become better. What about the ones who need that extra help if all we can do is say cheating is wrong what is the point if you are only going to talk and do nothing about it. Instead of saying why cheating is wrong why arent we thinking of ways why cheating started. Instead of us putting it down why arent we thinking of ways to prevent it. Stop ignoring the cheaters and try to help them. We are always ready to turn the other cheek but never ready to stand up and speak. Cheating is wrong only when you give no one a reason to cheat meaning help them not teachers but us we are peers we should be team every day not only when counts.
